You can have at least 3. I think the maximum was 5 or 6? Could be wrong.

You can have as many as you want. Any Gamer profile you create or import can sign up to Live thus having its own gamertag. All of my friends that come to my place to play 360 have their own profile on my machine. Not all of them are signed up to Live, but they all could if they wanted to.

I had 8 in mine but I deleted 6 of them because I just made them so my friends could play XBL with me before my little brother got his GT now I dont have to minipulate the 1 month trial. =}
Is the account you make xbox.com the one you have to use to play on Live? Or are they separate?

Wait, you're confusing me. So your issue is that you don't actually pay to subscribe to Live, but you keep using those free 1 month subscriptions over and over?

You're thinking of when you put your HDD on a different console from your original one for whatever reason. Replacement, etc. Everything you download from Xbox Live is tied into your account and the console that you downloaded it with. Let's say your 360 crashed and you sent it in for replacement. If you are trying to use content such as TV shows or Movies or Live Arcade games that you downloaded on your old console, you must be connected and signed into Live to verify that you are using the content and nobody else. This is so you don't purchase that stuff and transfer it to your friend's 360 so they get it for free. That said, this situation wouldn't delete content from you HDD, which is what sounds like happened to you.
